An Update from Your Friends at Gillett Dental Care

We hope this update finds you and your family in good health.  Our community has been through a lot over the last few months.  All of us are looking forward to resuming more normal habits and routines.  While many things have changed, one thing remains the same: our commitment to your safety.

As we reach out to you to reschedule a canceled appointment, or get you scheduled for needed care, we want to help you understand the measures we are taking for your comfort and security. Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice.  We follow infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association, the Center for Disease Control and OSHA.  We are following these agencies and continuing to update as new recommendations are developed.

Some of the changes you will see when it is time for your next appointment:

  • When we call you to confirm your appointment we will ask some screening questions.  These will be repeated when you come in and we will take your temperature.
  • We have hand sanitizer in the reception area and ask you to use it when you enter the office.
  • Our reception area will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys or books, since these items are difficult to sanitize.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients.
  • If the reception area is busy, we may ask you to wait in your car.  We will call or text when we are ready for you.

We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you and every patient, safe in our practice.

 Sincerely,

Dr. Ev and the Staff of Gillett Dental Care

First Dental Visit

During your first visit we mainly want to get to know you and your unique dental needs. We will introduce you to our staff and show you around our practice. By the end of your visit we hope you will consider our practice your dental home.

We will first discuss your medical history and our

fees and payment solutions. Unless you have an emergency, the first visit will be primarily a thorough exam and a set of digital x-rays for Dr. Ev to evaluate. Upon diagnosis, a treatment plan will be developed and discussed.

At this first visit, we will review your health history and dental concerns. We use a program called Dental Fitness which is an oral health “wellness” program.

Dr. Ev does a thorough four-point exam:

  1. Health of gums and bone

  2. Decay control

  3. Function - bite support and wear

  4. Appearance

Be prepared for your first visit by downloading our Registration and Health History. Please print, complete, and bring them on your first visit.

Upon completion of the first visit, payment is due.

For our customers with insurance, you may only need to pay your deductible.

Orthodontic Treatment

We treat all ages to give you the smile you’ve always wanted. Dr. Ev has extensive orthodontic training.

What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?

Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, Dr. Ev can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.

Why is age 7 considered the optimal time for screening?

By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, Dr. Ev can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.

What are the advantages of early interceptive treatment? Some of the most direct results of interceptive treatment are:

• Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth

• Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth

• Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth

• Preserving space for unerupted teeth

• Reducing the need for tooth removal

• Reducing treatment time with braces

Are you a candidate for orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics are not merely for improving the aesthetics of the smile; orthodontic treatment improves bad bites (malocclusions). Malocclusions occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth or feel about your smile.

Why should malocclusions be treated?

Untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping. Crossbites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear. Openbites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments.

We offer many types of braces. These include traditional metal, ceramic and clear aligners. Dr. Ev will be happy to discuss the best options for you and your lifestyle.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek

Ice can be applied to any bruised areas. For bleeding, apply firm (but gentle) pressure with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. If the bleeding does not stop with pressure or continues after 15 minutes, go to an emergency room.

Broken Braces and Wires

Remove a broken appliance only if it comes out easily. If it is lodged or painful to remove, cover any protruding edges with wax, cotton balls, gauze or chewing gum. DO NOT REMOVE any wire caught in the gums, cheek or tongue; see a dentist immediately. Emergency attention is usually not required for loose or broken appliances that cause no discomfort.

Broken Tooth

Rinse the area with warm water. Put a cold compress over the facial area of the injury.

Recover any broken tooth fragments. Call our office immediately. Gillett Dental Care uses CAD/CAM and CEREC software to restore broken teeth with the latest technology that allows patients greater ease and efficiency.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

Recover the tooth, making sure to hold it by the crown (top), and not the root end. Rinse, but do not clean or handle the tooth more than necessary. Reinsert the tooth in the socket and hold in place using a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, carry it in a cup containing milk or water. Because time is essential, call us immediately.

Possible Broken Jaw

In the event of jaw injury, tie the mouth closed with a towel, tie or handkerchief.  Go immediately to an emergency room.

Bleeding After a Baby Tooth Falls Out

Fold a piece of gauze and place it (tightly) over the bleeding area. Bite down on the gauze for 15 minutes—if bleeding continues, call our office at 920.855.2155.

Cold or Canker Sores

Over the counter medications will usually provide temporary relief. If sores persist, visit our office for an examination.
